Position: Marketing Director | Location: Dallas, TX, USA

Main Purpose of the Role

In this role, you will focus on driving brand and positioning development, customer engagement, customer acquisition, and expanding social media reach.

You will have a track record of brand development, ideally from within the tech start-up arena, be an expert on measuring the impact of marketing initiatives, and an identifier of cost-effective customer-acquisition channels. You will be responsible for managing the strategic marketing activities of MODX the company and its products and services.

The role is critical to managing a number of common challenges:

  • Lack of brand awareness and positioning impacts adoption rates.
  • Close coordination between Sales and Marketing is needed to ensure focus is directed to the correct target market.
  • High response rates to marketing programs based on optimal targeting, positioning and messaging are essential to building momentum.
  • The need for an interface to liaise with target customers, media contacts, analysts and conference organizers that are of high interest in our demographic.
  • To reduce sales cycles, compelling product and services solutions are necessary.
  • To facilitate high sales win rates, excellent product positioning, pricing and benefits need to be delivered to target markets.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Marketing Strategy and Management

  • To build a brand and position strategy that establishes a strong distinctive identity and position.
  • Create a cohesive strategy and marketing plan to drive key acquisition, retention and business metrics at a monthly level, while driving daily optimization of conversion rates and cost-per-acquisition metrics.
  • Test and innovate new acquisition and engagement programs.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of desktop, geo-fenced campaigns, meetups/events, award programs - with an analytical plan to measure success.
  • Identify and secure co-marketing and business development opportunities to build reach and awareness.
  • Conduct analytics-based funnel studies to determine best approach to acquire and retain users.
  • Develop user segmentation models and multi-touch contact strategies through user insights and data analysis.
  • Become the lead for all corporate external communication to:
    • Community (with guidance of community heads)
    • Strategic Partners (with guidance from head of partnerships)
    • Customers (prospects and paying)
    • MODX Social Media channels
    • PR agencies
    • Analysts (with collaboration with department heads)
  • Company Events (collaboration with department heads)
    • Meetups
    • Speaking functions
    • Conferences
    • MODX Expo
    • Joint events with Softlayer and others

Marketing Communication

  • Develop strategies, plans and lead the execution of integrated marketing campaigns across mobile advertising, digital, social media, email, SEM/SEO, partnerships and events that produce ROI positive results.
  • Work with agencies and third parties on online media campaign execution including set up, monitoring and mid-campaign optimizations across social media advertising, display advertising and paid search. Drive post-campaign analysis and reporting.
  • Manager of MODX.com and MODXCloud.com
    • Content management (creation and publishing, in collaboration with department heads)
    • Design (in collaboration with head of design)
  • Tracking Performance
    • Growth of MODX.com/MODXCloud.com (page views etc)

Product marketing

  • Ensure world-class product marketing positioning, messaging and launches. Infuse brand voice in every part of the MODX experience.
  • Focus on attracting and winning customers as effectively as possible
  • Taking ownership of a product suites from a marketing perspective
    • Clearly defining the target markets, customers, needs and buying cycles
    • Ensuring there is complete consistency and focus on the target market.
  • Support the development of core messaging (collaborating with product heads and others)

Desired Skills & Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years experience within a b2b or consumer focused high-tech, software or cloud services/SaaS/PaaS company, ideally in a role where you managed brand and positioning activities. Previous start-up experience a huge plus.
  • 5+ years of experience in digital marketing.
  • 5+ years of outstanding experience in online and b2b/b2c marketing.
  • You should have managed one or more significant multi channel marketing campaigns or new media experiences.
  • Deep understanding of email marketing techniques, online advertising strategies, A/B testing, and funnel-based acquisition models.
  • Deep analytical capabilities, combined with a flair for creative, breakthrough marketing ideas.
  • Owner/CEO mindset: ability to take ownership of an issue and see it through to business outcomes.
  • Proven ability to manage teams and lead multiple projects in a fast paced, cross-functional environment.
  • Must have hands-on knowledge of web analytics systems
  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to translate brand voice into appealing copy.
  • Sense of humor.

  • Professional, self reliant, reliable and extremely well motivated
  • BA/BS required, with MBA a plus.
